How To Fix A Sticking Door

Doors are very convenient. When they’re working, we don’t notice them. However, when they’re broken, it’s a nuisance, especially if there’s valuable material, clothes or storage items in your room, cupboard or attic.

Reasons why your door may be sticking

There are multiple reasons why a door may stick in the doorframe. This can include loose hardware, a sagging frame, or seized hinges.

Another reason why your door might stick, is due to humidity. The high level of moisture in the air can work its way into wood, resulting in a swollen door that doesn’t function as it should.

Inspection

Inspect the door. This may seem obvious, but it’s an important aspect of determining what the issue is. Looking at the inside and outside of the door frame for potential signs like scratched paint or worn edges, could indicate where the door is sticking.

Narrow the problem down

If you cannot see any visible problems, the next step would be to run your hand over the wood, to determine if there are any indents.

By finding out where the door is sticking specifically, you can narrow down potential problems for the issue.

If the door is sticking at the top of the frame, the issue is likely caused by loose hinges or a sagging frame. A door that is sticking in the middle of the frame is usually due to a loose strike plate. A door that is sticking in any other part of the frame may be a swelling issue that has been caused by high humidity levels in the room/house.

As well as this, inspecting the hinges, strike plate and screws can also help you in your journey to fixing the sticking door.

Time to start cleaning and dust off that toolbox

The first thing you’ll want to do is clean your door with warm, soapy water and a sponge. You’ll want to make sure that you get all between the hinges, cracks and screws, as dirt and grime can build up significantly over time if your doors are not looked after.

Now, depending on what the problem is, you’ll either have to lubricate the door hinges with WD-40, trim the door, replace the screws or tighten up the strike plate.
