Domestic Burglary In Liverpool

Domestic burglary in Liverpool is currently decreasing. This is no surprise, taking into account the massive decline shown by the Crime Survey of England and Wales from 1994 to the most recent statistics in 2014.

Official crime statistics show that in Liverpool, between April 2013 and March ’14 there were 15.2 crimes per thousand, and from April of the latter year to March of 2015 crime dropped to 13.6. This is much lower than the CSEW’s most recent rate of 33 (or 23, excluding sheds and outhouses).

Liverpool’s level of burglary is, however, not consistent throughout the city. The ward of Kensington & Fairfield has the highest burglary rate in the city of 45.5 per 1,000 citizens, which is more than double Liverpool’s average. This is also a world away from St Michael’s, a ward containing the affluent Aigburth, which has the rate of 6.1. That’s around eight times lower than Kensington & Fairfield.

No matter what area of Liverpool you live in or what security devices you own, the most important thing you can do to prevent burglary is to be vigilant. This means thinking like a burglar. For instance, if you keep doors or windows open when you’re not in the room, then you’re making your house an easy target.

Narrowboat In Liverpool

Some Work Completed By Our Liverpool Locksmiths

An interesting job one of our locksmiths tackled was gaining access to a room within a narrowboat. To make it even more memorable, this wasn’t just any room – it was a workshop in which handmade bespoke pipes are made to be sold.

Our locksmith was able to access the locking mechanism by making only a very small hole. Can you spot it? He then replaced the lock and escutcheon, replacing them with a newer, British Standard lock and character-appropriate gold escutcheon.

Home Security – A Few Insightful Tips to Help You Stay Safe at Home

Although domestic burglaries in Liverpool and throughout Merseyside are on the decline, that isn’t to say you can afford to take any chances with your home security. Our Liverpool locksmiths frequently carry out burglary repairs and boarding up services throughout the city and across all Merseyside boroughs, so we know first-hand just how much of a problem domestic burglaries still are for Liverpool residents.

When carrying out security surveys and general locksmith services for residential customers, our locksmiths frequently notice that there are many simple measures that homeowners, landlords and tenants alike can take to improve security at home. To help you secure your home and make it less of a target to thieves, we’ve provided the following home security tips to assist you in making your home a safer place.

Don’t provide shelter for burglars

No one provides shelter for burglars intentionally, but there are often many areas around residential properties that enable thieves to hide from view. Hedges and shrubs are good examples, as are tall front fences that block the view of the street. Trim the hedges near your ground floor windows and doors to limit hiding places.

Use lights as a deterrent to thieves

Lighting is an excellent deterrent to thieves and can be used in different ways to make your home less of a target to intruders. Illuminating the area around entrance points (doors and windows) is an outstanding deterrent to thieves, as is leaving on a few strategic lights to make it look as though someone is home when you go out.

Don’t leave your valuables in view

This is a common problem that our Liverpool locksmiths frequently notice and it’s a problem in all areas of Merseyside and not just densely populated areas of Liverpool like Toxteth and Wavertree. Keep your purse, wallet, phone and other valuables out of sight from ground floor windows and your home will be less of a break-in target.

Mind your doors and windows

It can get a bit stuffy indoors in summer, but leaving your doors and windows open or unlocked when you’re not in the room is a major home security mistake. Along with making sure that they’re securely locked, you should also make sure all the locks on your ground floor doors and windows are upgraded to the latest British Standard.

Make your home security visible

Sometimes the most effective deterrents to thieves are the simplest, like a ‘Beware of the Dog’ sign, a shiny new deadbolt on the front door or window security bars. Homes that look secure are much less likely to be targeted by thieves, even if it looks like the residents are wealthy and therefore might have many valuables inside.

Along with these insightful home security tips, also watch your garden shed and outbuildings, and never leave tools or objects that could be used to break in, or assault a family member, lying around outside in the garden or beside your home.

Thieves frequently target garden sheds for three prominent reasons. Firstly, because of their lower security, secondly, because they often contain valuable equipment and tools that could be used to break into the home, and thirdly, because they’re usually sited in secluded locations. These three factors combined make garden sheds and outbuildings common targets for thieves. If you’re worried about security at home, give our Liverpool locksmiths a call to arrange a security survey at a convenient time.

How to Keep Your Keys and Locks Properly Maintained

To ensure high levels of security at your home or place of business, it’s imperative that all your keys and locks are properly maintained and that they don’t fall into disrepair. There are a few ways to ensure this, starting with having your new locks installed by an experienced and qualified Liverpool locksmith from LockRite.

We can install new locks for you at a time that fits in with your schedule and help you to avoid the myriad of problems that often arise when locks haven’t been properly installed. These problems include compromised security as well as malfunctioning locks that need replacing which increases the cost of securing your commercial or residential property. Your keys must also be properly maintained, so always insist upon high-quality blank keys cut to perfection by an experienced Liverpool locksmith.

British Standard Locks

British Standard Kite Mark

You should ensure that your locks are suitable for securing your home. In order to ensure this, you need to have the latest British Standard for the type of lock. A lock that meets a British Standard can be identified by the kitemark symbol shown to the right. The organisation behind the ‘British Standard’ is the BSI Group, which sets standards for excellence in many industries. The rigorous tests they carry out help to mark out products of quality. The particular standard that you need to meet for your locks depends on what types of lock it is; we sell locks meeting the latest standards.

Meeting the correct British Standard is not just important for security reasons. If you don’t, you might not just be putting your home at risk, but potentially risking not meeting your insurer’s requirements should you be burgled. If you do fall victim to a burglary, we can help. Our locksmiths board up doors and windows that have been damaged, and repair or replace locks. Add our 24/7 number to your phone so that you have it when you need it: 0151 636 0002.

British Standard Locks and Home Insurance Policies

Away-day Robberies

Liverpool has been one of the cities that has suffered from what The Guardian refers to as away-day robberies – the name, unsurprisingly, referring to burglaries of footballer’s homes whilst they are out on the pitch. We’re looking at an example that was recently featured in a news article, and see what can be learned from the story.

Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool home suffered a burglary in December 2007, where four armed robbers entered the property. They may have been lured to the property by Gerrard’s wife’s revelation to the press that she’d bought him a Cartier watch worth £10,000. They arrived at the property the day after and stole two sets of car keys, along with a Rolex watch. They also tried to open a safe but were unable to do so. The original article can be read here.

The arrival of the burglars may have merely been a coincidence, but the timing does leave the possibility that the reveal spurred them into action (perhaps mistakenly taking a Rolex instead of a Cartier). It’s important to avoid revealing high-value purchases in the public arena, such as on social media. Being burgled whilst you aren’t in your property is actually rarer than you might imagine. The Government released statistics in 2011 revealing that a considerable number of burglaries occured whilst someone was in the property.

Confronting a burglar should be avoided. If you return to your property and see signs of forced entry such as a damaged door or a snapped lock, don’t enter it. Instead, you should retreat from the perimeter of your property and call the police, perhaps knocking on a neighbour and waiting in their property until the police arrive.

Where possible, our Liverpool locksmiths are able to repair damage caused to your locks by forced entry. If your lock has been severely damaged or has been snapped (force has been applied to break the lock cylinder into two parts and removed from the door) and a repair isn't possible, we can replace your locks on the spot with anti-snap Insurance approved locks.
