How to Keep Your Home Safe when You’re Going Out

These days, to keep your home safe – even when you’re going out for a few hours – involves more than making sure you’ve locked the front door.

The latest statistics outline the number of burglaries remained stable in comparison with the previous year, but there was a small increase in the number of domestic burglary offences (up 3%).

For your peace of mind and your home’s safety, read on. We’ll give some tips on how to keep your home safe and find peace of mind when you’re gone from home.

Small Safety Adjustments You Should Consider

1. Use a light switch timer

Ideally, you want to give the impression someone is at home all the time, even if it’s not the case.

It is why we recommend using lights which can switch randomly at given hours. Sure, you may also leave the lights on throughout the entire time you’ll be out, but it’s more expensive than this simple solution.

2. Keep valuable belongings out of sight

Expensive TVs, jewellery, laptops or cameras are an attraction for burglars.

To stay on the safe side, you could draw your curtains whenever you leave your home. It is common sense to keep your expensive belongings out of sight.

It will only take a few minutes of your time.

3. Outside lighting

Indoor lighting may be pretty obvious, but not that many homeowners take into consideration outside lights.

These are important as well because no burglar wants to break into a house while the entire neighbourhood can see them. You can even use a motion sensor for the patio or get some yard solar lights.

4. Use a smartphone to monitor your home

Nowadays, there are a lot of cheap options on the market of security cameras you can connect to your smartphone. It’s worth the investment because then you’ll always know whether your home is safe or not.

5. Talk to your neighbours

Good old fashioned home security is still something you can rely on today, especially if you have nice neighbours. Let them know when you’ll be out and ask them to keep an eye on your home during that time.

6. Add extra security

There’s no such thing as too much security. If you have the possibility, we recommend updating the basic security of your home. This includes the locks, windows, doors and the alarm system.

For example, you can get an alarm system which will send a notification to your phone if it gets triggered.

7. Get a Smart Lock

A connected lock offers both security and flexibility, letting you control the access to your home with your phone.

Some smart gadgets also let you see who is entering and leaving your home while you’re away.

Additionally, installation is easier than you think and you won’t need to change your front door altogether.

Burglaries are scary, especially because they can happen to anyone, anytime. We hope you’re going to apply these tips each time you’ll be going out and keep your home safe no matter what.
