7 Common and Not So Common Tips for Home Security

We’ve been living in an insecure world for so long that we have become immune to the crimes we hear about on the news all the time. So, we tend to presume that no bad thing will ever happen to us. And that’s where we start being careless, especially when it comes to our home security or the people we love.

Let’s look at some of the most common measures we can take to enhance our home safety. Then, we’ll make them more interesting with some security details you might not have heard of.

1. Use Smart Locks Instead of Traditional Ones

Burglars can easily break into houses with conventional door locks.  It’s a just a matter of skill and tools.

Smart Locks are a lot safer. Instead of a key, an access code opens your door. Here’s the best part of it: You can give family members or friends the code in case they want to get in while you are away.

2. Install a Smart Home Security System

A smart home security system is a combination of alarms, cameras, and sensors connected to a wireless hub. There are two large benefits this kind of a system can offer:

  • The cameras and the alarms will probably scare away potential thieves.
  • You get information about your home even when you are away.

3. Motion-Based Lighting Is a Must

There’s no better thief-deterrent than a sudden light turning on just before a break-in would take place. If cameras are in place as well, the burglar will most likely run away.

Even if they don’t stop, you still have a good chance to catch them on camera. It’s true they may wear masks. However, criminals tend to leave out small details that will eventually get them caught.

4. Safeguard Your Valuables

If you own valuables, please keep them in a safe or a bank deposit.

However, there may be things like gadgets or other valuables that you may use on a regular basis. In such case, you may only need to put them out of sight.

For instance, cabinets can be a good place to hide all the expensive tech gadgets in your house. Plus, they make your place look neat.

5. Watch out for Your Keys

Leaving your house keys anywhere can be a way of putting your home security in jeopardy.

For example, keys close to an open window are a good way to get them stolen. So, do keep an eye on them at all times.

6. Go for Anti-Vandal Paint

Who would have thought there is such a thing as thief-proof paint? It has an unusual composition that keeps it wet and sticky all the time.

So, when someone tries to climb a fence covered with this kind of paint, their clothes will get stained. The great thing is that it’s not easy to get rid of. Thus, the police will have an easier time identifying and catching the suspect.  Use this paint with caution though, as if you don’t warn people the paint is present on your property you could actually fall foul of the law yourself if someone ends up covered in it.

7. Use Visual Illusions

Here’s the last tip. If you give burglars the impression you are in the house all the time, they will start looking somewhere else.

How can you do that? Have some friends or family do some things to enforce the illusion. Have them:

  • Pick up your mail on a daily basis. A full mailbox is a hint that you’ve been away for a while.
  • Trim the hedges on your property or take care of any flowers you might have.
  • Close and open curtains during different times of the day.
